ORONO, Maine – The Thomas College women's basketball team opened their season with a 66-50 loss to UMass Boston at The Pit in Orono in a tournament hosted by Maine Maritime Academy.
The Beacons took an early advantage in the first, going up 13-4 six minutes in. The Terriers chipped away at the lead over the next three minutes, with a Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine) layup making it 17-13 with just over a minute left in the quarter. UMass Boston hit a free throw at the end of the period to make it 18-13 going into the second.
UMass Boston went on an early 11-1 run to start the second frame up 29-14 3:17 in. The teams traded baskets through the period to end the half with the Thomas trailing 33-22.
The Terriers netted a pair of unanswered buckets early in the third, with a Kaylee Ravagli (Lowell, Mass.) three-pointer cutting the lead to 33-27. The Beacons slowly pulled back ahead through the quarter, though, and took a 51-36 lead into the fourth.
The Beacons kept Thomas a distance through the fourth quarter and moved on with the 66-50 win.
Ravagli scored a career-best 19 points, hitting eight of her nine free throw attempts as well as three-of-six from three-point range. She also chipped in three boards and had three steals. Stubbs and Shala Davis (Troy, Maine) each chipped in seven points, with Stubbs pulling in a team-high seven rebounds.
Thomas returns to action back in Orono on Sunday, November 10 when they face Wheaton at 12:00 PM.
