Women's Basketball Downed by Mariners, 80-58

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's basketball team fell to Maine Maritime Academy, 80-58, on Tuesday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

In the defeat, Thomas drops below the .500 mark at 8-9 (5-5 NAC) while the Mariners improve to 10-6 (6-4 NAC).

The Terriers opened the first frame jumping out to a 12-7 lead behind five points from junior Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine).  The Mariners chipped away at the early deficit to end the quarter on a 16-5 run and 3-of-4 while shooting from behind the arch.  Mariners' leading scorer Alayne Felix paced her team with nine points in the quarter.

Maine Maritime turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter as they forced the Terriers to 2-of-11 shooting on the field along with nine turnovers.  Chloe Smedley added six points off the bench for the Mariners to hold a 41-23 lead at the half.

The Mariners continued to extend their lead throughout the second half to finish the scoring at 80-58.  Megan MacLean and Smedley each netted seven points in the half to lead the Mariners.  Freshman Nikki Bradstreet (Topsham, Maine) and sophomore Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine) each sunk a pair of threes for Thomas.

Maine Maritime was led offensively by Smedley on 15 points, five assists, and three rebounds.  Felix and Melinda Ogden each reached double figures with 13 points and ten points respectively.

Thomas was led by Stubbs and Carroll as they each tallied 11 points in the effort.  Bradstreet finished with ten points off the bench.

The Terriers will look to bounce back on Friday, January 26 as they host Colby-Sawyer at 5:30 p.m.
