WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's basketball team earned an 83-50 victory over Lesley University in the Thomas Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
The Terriers improve to 1-1 in the early season while the Lynx fall to 0-2 in their first two contests.
Thomas came out strong offensively in the first quarter as the Terriers outscored the Lynx 27-12. Senior Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass.) and sophomore Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine) combined for 15 points to lead the team. Lesley struggled from the floor as they converted on 4-of-17 shots and turned the ball over seven times. Key three pointers from Theresa Pereira and Cassidy Wygonik kept their team within reach.
The Terriers cranked up the defense in the second frame as they caused 15 turnovers and held the Lynx to just one field goal. Offensively, Nikki Bradstreet (Topsham, Maine) knocked down back-to-back threes along with another six points from Jones for a 46-20 lead at the break.
Throughout the second half, the Terriers continued to extend their lead as they outscored Lesley by a 37-30 margin. Karyn McEvoy finished strong for the Lynx as she netted all 11 of her points in the final two quarters. Thomas received 26 points off the bench to close out the scoring at 83-50.
Jones and Weaver each chipped in with 14 points and combined for six rebounds in the win. Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine) added 10 points and a pair of assists.
Wygonik led the Lynx with her 14 points and four boards while McEvoy scored 11 points along with three rebounds.
The Terriers return to action on Sunday, November 19 for their second game of the Thomas Tip-Off Classic against Fisher (Mass.) at 3:00 p.m.
