WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women's basketball team opened their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) schedule with a 68-37 loss to Maine Maritime Academy at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Terriers fall to 3-2 (0-1 NAC) in the early season while the Mariners improve to 3-1 (1-0 NAC) in the win.
The Mariners took a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game but the Terriers responded with a small run to bring the score within one point at the 5:56 mark. Maine Maritime cranked up the offense with a 10-2 run to finish the quarter at 17-8.
With five minutes left in the half, Jordan Turner (Casco, Maine / Lake Region) added two free throws and a layup to bring the score within 13. A 6-4 run by the Mariners gave them a 31-16 advantage at the half.
The Mariners added heavy pressure on defense in the second half as they held the Terriers to just six points in the third quarter. Kristi Willey added a pair of three-pointers to give her team a 55-22 lead at the end of the third.
The Terriers pushed forward and outscored the Mariners in the last quarter 15-13 but fell to a final of 68-37.
Leading the Terriers was Turner with a team-high seven points and the game-high of four assists. Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) added six points and three rebounds while Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine / MDI) contributed with five points and five rebounds.
Leading the offense for the Mariners was Alayne Felix with 16 points and nine rebounds while Melinda Ogden addied 12 points and five steals. Also chipping in was Kristi Willey with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Terriers will be taking on Green Mountain in a NAC matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 2 at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
