WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women's basketball team collected their second win of the Thomas Tip-Off Classic, defeating Wheelock College, 61-53, on Sunday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
The Terriers stay unbeaten early in the season as they improve to 3-0 while the Wildcats are winless at 0-3.
The Terriers opened up to a four-point lead in the middle of the first quarter. A quick 5-0 run by the Wildcats gave them a 13-12 lead late. With seven seconds left in the first quarter, Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine / MDI) knocked down a three, bringing the Terriers ahead 15-13 heading into the second.
Thomas was able to continue their strong defense throughout the second quarter as they outscored the Wildcats 17-8. Junior guard Sammie Griffin (Union, Maine / Medomak Valley) added a three in the final 13 seconds to give Thomas a 32-21 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats added quick points in the first four minutes of the third quarter to bring the score 35-31. The Terriers responded with a layup by Karli Stubbs (Lewiston, Maine / Edward Little) and a three pointer by Jordan Turner (Casco, Maine / Lake Region) to go ahead by nine with 5:54 left in the quarter.
Thomas shutout the Wildcats for just under six minutes in the third quarter, outscoring them 12-4 in the final seven minutes, giving them a 47-35 lead.
Wheelock pushed offensively in the final quarter to bring the deficit within eight points with just under seven minutes to go. Michelle Woods would then finish a three-pointer to bring the score within five with 5:20 left in the game.
Turner completed a lay-up and after being fouled on the play, she made the following free throw to give the Terriers a 54-47 lead with 2:45 left on the clock. Again in the remaining 46.6 seconds, Turner was fouled and made the two free throws to give the Terriers an eight-point lead.
The Wildcats answered with a three-pointer by Emily Doyle who brought the score within five in the last 30 seconds of the game. Free throws from Stubbs and Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) finished the scoring at 61-53.
The Terriers were led on a double-double by Jones with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Nielsen (North Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth) added 12 points and seven boards while Turner added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Woods led the scoring for Wheelock with 19 points and five rebounds while Brianna Hochwarter added 13 points and hauled down five rebounds.
Terriers will host Colby College at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22 in non-conference matchup at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
