Strong Second Half Powers Terriers Past Clippers, 65-40

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women's basketball team defeated the University of Maine at Machias, 65-40, in the first annual Thomas Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

The Terriers improve to 2-0 on the season in the win while the Clippers fall to 4-3.

The Terriers started off trading points with the Clippers as junior Jordan Turner (Casco, Maine / Lake Region) added six points for the Terriers before the end of first quarter with Thomas trailing 14-13.

In the second quarter, Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) made four free throws on two different fouls to bring the Terriers to lead a 17-16 with 8:25 left in the half. Throughout the remainder of the half, the Clippers would continue to score when Kori Coro hit her second three pointer of the quarter.

The Terriers answered back when Abby Nielsen (North Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth) made a layup and three pointer bringing the Terriers to a 28-24 lead with 2:19 remaining in the half.  The Clippers added a free throw before the break to bring the score to 28-25.

The Terriers outscored the Clippers 14-5 in the third quarter giving them a 39-30 lead going into the fourth. Sophomore guard Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine / MDI) added a layup and was fouled on the play. She made the ensuing free throw to bring the Terriers to a 15-point lead.  Thomas cranked up the offense in the fourth, going on a 26-10 run.

Jones finished with a game-high of 18 points, including a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.  Turner chipped in with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

The Clippers were led by Linda Riley with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Coro and Alicen Brooks each added 9 points.

The Terriers will take on Wheelock College at 3:00p.m. on Sunday, November 20 in day two of the Thomas Tip-Off Classic at the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium
