Thomas Women's Basketball Stopped by Salem State in Season Opener

SALEM, MA --- Salem State University received double-doubles from freshmen Kia Fernandes and Tyra Scott in the collegiate debuts en route to a 62-40 win over Thomas College at the Salem State Tip-Off Classic. It was the season opener for both schools.

Senior Katie McAllister (Pittston, ME) led the Terriers (0-1) with nine points on 4-of-14 shooting, while sophomore Jordan Agger-Barnes (South Portland, ME) added six points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench.

Seniors Ashleigh Gagne (Waterville, ME) and Brenna Hutchinson (Brooklin, ME) and junior Tess McClenahan (Salmon, ID) added five points each with McClenahan pulling in six rebounds. Gagne had five boards.

Fernandes led Salem State, which led 28-14 at halftime and 43-22 after three, with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Scott added 10 points and 13 boards, while Kaitlyn Byran and Malissa Saad each tallied eight points.

The Vikings' pressured the Terriers into 21 turnovers behind 14 steals and held a 49-36 advantage on the boards. In addition, Thomas was limited to 25.5 percent shooting (14-of-55) from the field.

The Terriers will face the University of Southern Maine at 1 p.m. Saturday to kick off day two at the Salem State Tip-Off Classic.
