CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thomas College softball team fell to St. Olaf before defeating New Rochelle on Monday afternoon at Hancock Park.
GAME 1: Thomas 1, St. Olaf 2
Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) and Julie Graf locked up in a pitcher's duel early, with neither team scoring in the first three innings. Thomas finally opened the scoring in the fourth, when Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Oles evened it right back up, scoring one in the fourth to make it 1-1. The score stayed tied until the bottom of seventh, when St. Olaf scored on a Thomas error for the walk off.
Coulter pitched four innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts in the no decision. Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) took the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run in 2.2 innings pitched.
GAME 2: New Rochelle 4, Thomas 10
The Blue Angels took a quick lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first, but Thomas came back to score three runs in the bottom of the inning. Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) hit an inside the park home run down the left field line that scored two, then Coulter came in to score on an error to give Thomas a 3-2 lead. Lauren Guppy (New Sharon, Maine) scored on a wild pitch in the second to make it a 4-2 game.
After New Rochelle scored in the top of the third, Katie Taylor blew the game open with a bases clearing single, then scored on an error to make it 8-3. The Blue Angels scored in the fifth to make it 8-4, before Madison Thornton (Hancock, Maine) hit a double in her first career at bat in the sixth then came in to score on a Dunphy single. Dunphy scored on a LeBourveau sacrifice fly to give Thomas the 10-4 win.
After LeBourveau pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts, Breanna Whitmarsh (Puyallup, Wash.) earned the win in relief, giving up a run on two hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work.
Thomas will play a doubleheader with Wellesley and Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Tuesday, March 26 starting at 2:00 PM.
