KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Thomas College softball split their opening day with a win over Nichols, followed by a loss to Clarkson. Head Coach Ali Krigel earned the win in her first career game in the Thomas dugout.
GAME 1: Nichols 1, Thomas 3
Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) scored the first run of the Thomas season in the bottom of the first, scoring on a Nichols error to give Thomas he 1-0 lead. The Terriers loaded the bases with no out, but the Bison got out of it to hold the Thomas lead to one.
Thomas continued to get runners on base over the next three innings but were unable to bring them around. The Terriers were finally able to pad their lead in the fifth when Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) scored on a groundout to make it 2-0. Colpack drove in the Terriers third run in the sixth when she singled Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) in from second. The Bison were able to get one back in the seventh, but Thomas shut the door for the 3-1 victory.
Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing two hits. Breanna Whitmarsh (Puyallup, Wash.) closed out the game in the seventh, allowing a run on two hits and earning the save. Candice Nelson took the loss for Nichols.
GAME 2: Thomas 1, Clarkson 6
Clarkson jumped out to an early lead with a run on a sacrifice fly in the first to go up 1-0. The Golden Knights added another run in the third and threatened for more with the bases loaded, but the Terriers worked their way out of it to escape down 2-0.
Thomas got one back in the fourth when Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) homered to straight center field. The homer was also her 100th career hit.
Clarkson separated themselves with a four-run fourth, going ahead 6-1 and moving on with the win.
Olivia Zoeller earned the win for Clarkson in seven innings of work. LeBourveau took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits in three innings.
Thomas plays a doubleheader with Endicott and Buffalo State on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 11:45 AM.
