Big Inning Lifts Pilgrims over Terriers; Face Husson in Elimination Game Saturday

BANGOR, Maine – The Thomas College softball team fell to New England College, 3-3, in game four of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Terriers will now play Husson University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday in the elimination game and a trip to the championship round on the line.

The Terriers plated one run in the opening frame after Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) reached on a walk and was moved to second by an Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) sacrifice bunt.  Colpack took advantage of a throwing error by the Pilgrims as she came around to score for a 1-0 lead.

Thomas added another run in the third inning as Colpack knocked a double to center field.  Piirainen followed with a single to right field to score Colpack for a 2-0 advantage.

The Pilgrims' offense came alive in the top of the fifth as Chanel Welch knocked a two-RBI single.  Destiny Helmedach followed with a RBI double and a Joslyn Gallagher RBI single to take a 4-2 lead.  The Terriers responded with a run to cut the deficit down to one as Julia Nadeau (Randolph, Maine) scored on a dropped fly ball.

NEC added an insurance marker in the top of the seventh as Helmedach hit a RBI single to center field to make it 5-3.

Taylor Barbour threw all seven innings in the win for NEC, allowing seven hits and three runs (one earned).  Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) was given the loss in relief for Thomas.
