CASTLETON, Vt. – The Thomas College softball team was swept for the first time in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Castleton University on Saturday, 11-2 and 4-3.
Game 1: Castleton 11, Thomas 2 – 5 innings
The Terriers opened the scoring in the top of the first on a RBI single from Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.). The Spartans offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, including four unearned runs on two Thomas errors.
Castleton added two more runs in the second on a RBI single by Briley Blackbird and two-RBI double from Olivia Thayer. The Terriers tacked on another as Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) scored on a double play in the third. The Spartans finished the scoring at 11-2 in the third on an infield RBI single by Calli Van Gorden.
Taylor Paquette took the win in the circle for Castleton, allowing five hits and two runs. Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) shouldered the loss, allowing five runs (two earned).
Game 2: Castleton 4, Thomas 3 – 8 innings
Thomas jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third on singles by Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) and LeBourveau. The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the sixth with a double and single to tie it up at 2-2, forcing extra innings.
In extras, the Terriers capitalized on a Castleton error to bring in a run. The Spartans tied the game with a single by Timi Carone and won it with a walk-off double from Gorden to end at 4-3.
Paquette threw 4.2 innings of relief to take the win while Coulter was given the loss in a complete game, scattering seven hits and three runs.
The Terriers will wait to hear the final seedings of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament.
