WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College softball team earned a 7-2 non-conference victory over crosstown rival Colby College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Terriers improve to 19-13 on the year while the Mules drop down to 2-25.
Before the game, senior Abby Nielsen (North Yarmouth, Maine) was honored for her dedication to the Thomas softball program.
The Terriers' offense brought around three runs in the opening frame on a single from Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine), a double by Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.), and a sacrifice fly from Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) to make it 3-0.
Thomas added another run in the second as Piirainen hit a single to left field to score Lauren Guppy (New Sharon, Maine). In the following frame, the Mules got on the board on a Lolo Niemiec sacrifice fly to score Holly Lallis. The Terriers responded back with another run in the bottom of the third on Guppy's sacrifice fly to plate Nielsen, extending the lead to 5-1.
Later on in the fifth, Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) singled in two more runs on her hit to center field. Colby added another run in the top of the sixth on a Zena Robert RBI single to end at 7-2.
Breanna Whitmarsh (Puyallup, Wash.) earned a complete game victory on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out seven. Holly Lallis threw six innings in the effort for the Mules, scattering 15 hits and seven runs.
The Terriers will host a non-conference doubleheader with Plymouth State on Thursday.
