BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Thomas College softball team split back-to-back games with the University of New England on Wednesday, dropping game one, 8-0, and winning in game two, 6-2.
Game 1: UNE 8, Thomas 0 – 5 innings
The Nor'easters capitalized on Thomas errors early as they pushed across three runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Melissa Jakubowski and singles by Caty Flagg and Caroline Schoenbucher. UNE tacked on another three unearned runs in the fourth including a two-run homerun by Sarah Lachapelle. In the fifth, the Nor'easters finished the scoring with singles by Andrea Gosper and Ali Kuechler to end at 8-0.
Sydnee Bessler earned her 11th win on the mound for UNE, allowing two hits and no runs. Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) took the loss in four innings, giving up nine hits and six unearned runs.
Game 2: Thomas 6, UNE 2
The Terriers took an early lead in the opening frame on an RBI single by Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) to score Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.). The Nor'easters knotted the game up in the bottom of the third as Sam Dreissig brought in a run on a single to right center.
Coulter put Thomas back on top in the fourth with an RBI double to plate LeBourveau. Later on in the fifth, Coulter came through once again with a grand slam down the left field line, bringing the Thomas lead to 6-1. UNE added one more run in the fifth from Schoenbucher to end at 6-2.
After going 3-for-3 with six RBI at the plate, Coulter earned her seventh victory on the mound in a complete game, scattering ten hits and two runs. Melissa Sprague threw five innings, giving up seven hits and six runs for the Nor'easters.
Thomas will return to conference action on Saturday, April 14 as they host UMaine-Farmington.
