WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College softball team defeated crosstown rival Colby College, 5-2 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.
Thomas lead-off hitter Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) was on base four times in five plate appearances to lead the Terriers.
Colpack had three hits, drove in two runs, scored, and walked for the Terriers (10-11 overall). Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) added two hits, walked, and scored a run. Lauren Guppy (New Sharon, Maine) and Kayla Bess (Madison, Maine) both had one hit and one run scored, while Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) and Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) had one hit and one RBI. Lauren Farina (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored and drove in a run.
Colby first-year catcher Lolo Niemiec had two hits and scored a run. Kathleen Mason had one hit and drove in a run. Mule pitcher Julia Saul scored the other run and had a walk.
The Terriers got a clutch two-out double from Colpack to score twice in the second inning. Bess singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Julia Nadeau (Randolph, Maine). After a a single by Guppy and then the second out, Colpack smacked her double to bring home both runners.
Thomas added a lone run in the third inning on an unearned run. Farina walked earlier in the inning and came home on Taylor's single.
The Mules manufactured two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the margin to 3-2. Saul walked to start the inning and moved to second on Niemiec's single. Paige Hartnett moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Mason followed with an RBI single. Niemiec also scored on the play thanks to a Thomas error.
The Terriers added the final two runs of the game in the sixth inning. Colpack and Piirainen had back-to-back singles and Thomas loaded the bases when Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) got on by error. Coulter walked to bring in the first run of the inning. Farina drove in the second run when Piirainen came in on a fielder's choice.
Breanna Whitmarsh (Puyallup, Wash.) earned her first collegiate win on the mound for Thomas in a complete game, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).
The Terriers will travel to the University of New England tomorrow for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
