CLERMONT, Fla. – The Thomas College softball team fell to Wisconsin-Superior, 6-2, and defeated Union College (N.Y.) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Legends Way.
Game 1: Wis.-Superior 6, Thomas 2
The Yellow Jackets got on the board on three unearned runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. Into the fourth, Superior extended their lead to 6-0 on a bases clearing double from Saige Patrick.
The Terriers looked to make a rally in the bottom of the fifth as RBI singles from Kayla Bess (Madison, Maine) and Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) cut the lead to four. The Thomas bats fell silent in the final two frames as the scoring finished at 6-2.
Damara Theis earned the victory on the mound for the Yellow Jackets in 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs.
Breanna Whitmarsh was given the loss for Thomas, throwing a complete game, giving up 11 hits and six runs (three earned).
Game 2: Thomas 7, Union (N.Y.) 3
Thomas got on the board in the second inning on an RBI double from Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine). They extended the lead in the next frame on a single from Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.), a double from Lauren Farina (Schenectady, N.Y.), and sacrifice fly from Bess.
The Dutch cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2. Thomas pushed the lead to 7-2 in the fifth and seventh on a single by Chiara Stone (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and sacrifice fly from Piirainen. Union added one more in the seventh to end at 7-3.
Thomas starter Camille Coyne (Valley Falls, N.Y.) threw three innings, scattering four hits and two runs (one earned). Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) earned the win in relief in four innings, seven hits, and one run (none earned).
Dana Dolinko shouldered the loss for Union in five innings, eight hits, and five runs (two earned).
The Terriers will be take on Loras and Mount Mary on Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m.
