Softball Closes Regular Season With Split at New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. --- The Thomas College softball team wrapped up its regular season slate by splitting a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader against New England College at Old Concord Road. The Pilgrims scored a 4-3 win in game one, while the Terriers won the nightcap, 5-1.

Game 1: New England College 4, Thomas 3
New England College (21-19, 8-4 NAC) grabbed the early lead in game one as Brianna Castellano scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning.

Thomas (16-17, 9-3 NAC) drew even in the top of the second when freshman Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine / Mount Desert Island) scored on an error after fellow freshman Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine / Noble) reached on a single to right-center field. The Terriers had an opportunity to take the lead in the third but juniors Korrie Laren (Blackstone, Mass. / Blackstone-Millville) and Sonja Morse (South China, Maine / Cony) were stranded at second and third, respectively, after drawing walks.

After escaping the threat, the Pilgrims took a 2-1 lead in their half of the third when Gabriella Marcheschi scored on a Joslyn Gallagher RBI double to center.

After quite bats in the fourth and fifth innings, Thomas took the lead on a two-run double by Carroll in the sixth that scored Randi Dennett (so., Winthrop, Maine / Winthrop) and freshman Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansfield Union).

New England College answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth as Colleen Holt drew a bases-loaded walk and Brittany Distante scored on an RBI single by Castellano.

Marcheschi threw a complete-game seven-hitter with four walks and two strikeouts and recorded one of NEC's seven hits. Gallagher added a double and also drew a walk.

The Terriers also received a complete game from Sonja Morse. She allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and five walks while striking out eight.

Taylor was 3-for-3 to lead Thomas offensively, while Carroll was had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. 

Game 2: Thomas 5, New England College 1
Thomas opened up game two with a run in the top of the first inning as Lexi Colpack (fr., Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Korrie Laren RBI single to center.

Colpack also scored the Terriers' second run. She scored on an RBI infield single by Courtney Veilleux (jr., Oakland, Maine / Messalonskee) in the third inning after leading off the frame with a single to left field.

The Thomas lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth as Laren hit a three-run double to left center. That would be all the offense Sonja Morse would need. She scattered three hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort, allowing only a solo home run to NEC designated player Gabriella Marcheschi in the sixth inning.

Laren finished with three hits and four RBIs to lead the Terriers offensively.

Marcheschi drew the start for NEC, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. Debra Mazzeo pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the Pilgrims, scattering two hits and and striking out three.

The teams will meet again next Friday on the opening day of the NAC Softball Championship Tournament. The Terriers will be seeded second and the Pilgrims third in the playoff event which will be hosted by Castleton University.
