PLYMOUTH, N.H. --- Plymouth State University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Thomas College, 7-5 and 11-3, on Tuesday at D&M Park.
PSU has won seven of its last eight games to improve to 16-22 overall, while Thomas drops just below the .500 mark at 15-16. PSU out-hit the visitors 26-15 in the twin bill.
Both teams had hot bats in the early going of the first game, as the score was tied 5-5 after three innings. Junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) and Davis drove in runs to give PSU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Jordanna Agger (South Portland, Maine) led off the top of the second for Thomas with a home run to deep left field, and freshman Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) singled home a run later in the inning to even the score.
Junior Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.) doubled to right field to drive in a run for PSU in the bottom of the inning, but Thomas rallied with three runs in the top of the third. Junior Korrie Laren (Blackstone, Mass.) doubled home a run and scored on an infield groundout, and Taylor brought home another run with an RBI grounder.
PSU evened the score again in the bottom of the inning when junior Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) doubled to bring in a run, and sophomore Taylor Wood (Londonderry, N.H.) knocked in another on a groundout. The Panthers scored what turned out to be the decisive runs in the fourth inning when freshmen Kayla Nester (Fairfax, Vt.) and Autumn Beyor (Highgate, Vt.) recorded back-to-back doubles, and Kennard delivered an RBI single to right.
Abbott recorded the win for PSU with a complete-game effort, allowing just six hits while striking out two. Senior Faith Robinson (Auburn, N.H.) suffered the loss for the Terriers.
Thomas jumped on top in the nightcap with two runs in the first inning on a two-run single by freshman Brittany Ward (Searsport, Maine), but PSU blew the game open with four runs in the first inning and five more in the second. A walk, a hit-batter and a bloop single set the stage for PSU in the first inning, and Abreu belted a pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 4-2 lead.
Five straight hits by PSU with two outs led to a five-run rally in the second inning. Freshman Melissa Goss (Templeton, Mass.) and Abreu had RBI singles, Abbott contributed an RBI double, and Wood capped the rally with a two-run single.
Both teams plated single runs in the fourth inning, and PSU ended the game an inning early with a run in the sixth inning, capped by an RBI double by junior Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.).
Sophomore Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) earned the win for PSU with a complete-game performance, allowing just two earned runs in six innings, striking out three.
The Panthers will wrap up the regular season Saturday with a Little East Conference doubleheader at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Thomas wraps up its regular season Saturday with a North Atlantic Conference twinbill at New England College.
