Softball Edges Lawrence, Falls to Middlebury on Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. — For the fourth consecutive day, the Thomas College softball team split a pair of games at The Spring Games. The Terriers (4-6) edged Lawrence, 2-1, to start play Saturday before falling to Middlebury, 8-0, in five innings.

Lawrence 2, Thomas 1
Thomas College scored the tiebreaking run in the top of the sixth inning and held on for a 2-1 nonconference victory over Lawrence University.

Junior Sonja Morse (South China, Maine / Cony) allowed just four hits over seven innings to get the win for Thomas. She struck out five and walked four. Maddie MacLean went the distance for Lawrence (5-6-1), allowing 10 hits and striking out one without a walk.

The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when freshman Cassie Contigiani (Belmont, N.H. / Belmont) doubled and scored on a Lexi Colpack (fr., Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) single.

Lawrence tied it in the bottom half of the inning after loading the bases on a walk, a hit batsman and a bunt single. Tierney Duffy hit into a fielder's choice that forced a runner out at the plate. An error later in the inning allowed Kori Looker to score and tie the game at 1-1.

Thomas took the lead back in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by freshman Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine / Mount Desert Island). Lawrence had runners at second and third in the bottom of the sixth but a strikeout ended the inning.

Lawrence threatened in both the bottom of the sixth and the seventh but couldn't plate the tying run.

The Vikings also had Anna Wawiorka at second with two outs in the seventh, but Savanna Marsicek lined out to shortstop to end the game.

Colpack went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and Contigiani added a pair of hits for Thomas. Rachel Urich was the only Lawrence player with multiple hits, finishing with two.

Middlebury 8, Thomas 0 (5 innings)
The Terriers had little time to enjoy the victory as they immediately rolled into a matchup with Middlebury on an adjacent field.

The Panthers grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Carlyn Vachow plated Jackie Stern with an RBI double, before scoring two batters later.

Middlebury scored four times in the third, highlighted by a two-run single to right center by Sarah Freyre. Siobhan O'Sullivan and Kat Maehr added RBI singles in the fourth to make it an 8-0 final.
Senior Faith Robinson (Auburn, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) suffered the loss for Thomas, allowing six runs, four earned, over three innings of work. Allison Quigley picked up the win, tossing a two-hit shutout over five innings with seven strikeouts.

Robinson had one of Thomas' two hits - a single up the middle in the first inning. The other came off the bat of freshman Michaella Arsenault (Poland, Maine / Poland), who singled past the third baseman to open the second inning.

Stern finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Freyre went 2-3 with two RBI, Vachow was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Hye-Jin Kim finished the game 2-for-3.

Thomas concludes its spring trip with a trio of games on Sunday. The Terriers face Buffalo State at 9 a.m. and Saint Benedict at 11 a.m. before a rematch with Middlebury at 1 p.m.
