Softball Tops Fredonia, Falls to RIT at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Thomas College softball team split a pair of five-inning games Wednesday, topping Fredonia State (N.Y.), 11-2, before falling to RIT by a 9-1 score at The Spring Games at Hancock Park.

Thomas 11, Fredonia State 2 (5 innings)
The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After freshman Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) drew a walk to lead off the game and stole second, she scored on a Sonja Morse (jr., South China, Maine / Cony) RBI single up the middle.

Fredonia got two runs back in the bottom half of the frame as Lindsey Forness scored on an RBI single by Madeline Medina and Cassidy Herman plated Alyssa Morgan with a sacrifice fly.

Senior catcher Lindsy Hoopingarner (Richmond, Maine / Richmond) drove in Thomas' next three runs, scoring junior Courtney Veilleux (Oakland, Maine / Messalonskee) and Colpack on an RBI single in the second and junior Korrie Laren (Blackstone, Mass. / Blackstone-Millville) on an RBI single in the fourth.

The Terriers ended up plating six runs in the fourth. In addition to Hoopingarner driving in Laren, Thomas rattled off four straight run-scoring base hits capped off by a two-RBI double by Veilleux.
Fredonia managed one baserunner each in the fourth and fifth innings but was not able to push another run across.

Morse (2-1) went the distance, allowing just two runs while scattering five hits and three walks and striking out one.

Hoopingarner finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Veilleux and junior Madison Bentz (Ottawa, Ill. / Ottawa Township) both finished with a single and a double.

Colpack was officially 1-for-2 but also drew two walks and came around to score three times.
Three Blue Devil pitchers combined to allow 11 runs - nine earned - on 10 hits and five walks. Starter Aldyn Carlson threw the first 3 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Morgan finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Medina and Leanne Villani also singled for Fredonia.

RIT 9, Thomas 1 (5 innings)
Fielding a lineup consisting primarily of reserves against RIT in the day's second game, the Terriers managed just one run on two hits.

The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings, tallying two runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third.

Thomas scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. freshman Michaella Arsenault (Poland, Maine / Poland) rocked a double to right center, scoring sophomore Taylor Johnson (Oxford, Maine / Oxford Hills) from second base.

After retiring the Tigers in order in the fifth, the Terriers had an opportunity to extend the game but stranded a pair of runners.

RIT pitcher Sierra Valentine picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits and four walks and 13 strikeouts.

Centerfielder Amanda Cook finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and McKenzie Martin, Emily Shoemaker and Sam Killian added two hits apiece as the Tigers knocked out 13 hits in the contest. 

Thomas starter Taylor Jordan (jr., Kingfield, Maine / Mount Abram Regional) was hung with the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits in just two-thirds of an inning. Reliever Faith Robinson (sr., Auburn, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) was charged with the final seven runs, six of which were earned. She allowed eight hits and walked two while striking out one.

Freshman Haley Littlefield (Mount Desert Island, Maine / Mount Desert Island) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Freshman Sydney LeBourveau's (Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansifield Union) single through the left side in the seventh inning accounted for Thomas' other hit.

The Terriers continue their spring trip Thursday afternoon with games against Hood (3 p.m.) and Grinnell (5 p.m.) at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont.
