BIDDEFORD, ME - The Thomas softball team split a pair of games this afternoon against the University of New England, taking game one 7-6 in eight innings and dropping the second game 6-0.
Led by a four-hit game by Briana Warren, the Terriers earned a 7-6 win in eight innings. The Terriers (4-17) jumped out in front early on, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. With the bases loaded in the first, Korrie Laren came through with a two RBI double that scored Warren and Sonja Morse to give Thomas a quick 2-0 lead.
In the second, Lindsay Hoopingarner reached with a one-out single, then Warren sent her home on an RBI double center field. Warren would advance to third on a Nor'easter throwing error. Morse than hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Warren on the tag up, as Thomas opened up a 4-0 lead.
UNE (16-13) got one run back in the bottom of the third when Adrienne Chase singled home Paige Moore-Haskell. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Nor'easters scored four runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead from the Terriers.
Chase singled home Sydney Helmbrecht and Moore-Haskell came around to score on the throw to pull UNE within one. Cat Ouellette doubled home a run in the sixth, and Helmbrecht singled her home to pull the Nor'easters ahead 5-4.
The Terriers came back to tie it in the top of the seventh when Jordan Agger-Barnes put it in play to the shortstop who made a throwing error that allowed Warren, who had reached on a single earlier, to come around to score the tying run.
After retiring UNE in the bottom of the inning, Thomas regained the lead in the eighth as Hoopingarner doubled to score Taylor M. Johnson. Hoopingarner scored on an a throwing error after Warren had singled to give the Terriers a 7-5 advantage.
The Nor'easters got one back in the bottom half, but Morse would close them out for the complete game victory. Morse recorded seven strikeouts to earn her second win on the season.
The Terrier bats struggled in game two, managing just four hits off UNE starting pitcher Abby Lambert and fell 6-0 to split the doubleheader.
Kelly Murphy led the Nor'easters with three runs batted in along with two hits. Lambert had six strikeouts in the complete game win.
Emily McKenney earned the start on the mound for Thomas and went four innings, giving up two runs with one strikeout. Faith Robinson went two innings in relief and gave up four runs (three earned) with one strikeout.
Agger-Barnes, Laren, Morse and Mary Ortiz each had one hit in the game.
The Terriers will next take the field on Saturday, April 18 when they hit the road for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Johnson State. First game is scheduled for 2:00 PM with the second to follow.
