WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College softball was able to take two games from University of Maine-Presque Isle, defeating the Owls 12-1 in both games of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon.
With the victories Thomas improves to 12-11, while UMPI falls to 6-20 on the season.
Thomas started off quickly, grabbing one run in the first inning on a sacrifice ground out by Courtney Veilleux to score Alyssa Eugley. The Terriers added another four runs in the second with a Eugley double to the gap to bring in Ashlee Quirrion, a Veilleux single that scored two runs, and Lauren Hachey singled to score Veilleux.
UMPI cracked the shutout in the third, when Donovan singled to score Luetjen. Thomas responded however when Mary Ortiz doubled in the top of the third that scored Taylor Bergeron, then the Red and Black erupted for five runs in the fourth, including a two run homerun by Hachey to pull the Terrier lead to 11-1.
Thomas added another run in the fifth to seal a 12-1 victory.
Taylor Jordan recorded the victory in the circle, tossing five innings while giving up five hits and striking out three.
Thomas recorded three runs in the opening inning, including a double by Veilleux and Hachey's second homer of the night that plated in two. The Owls cut the deficit to two in the second with a Donovan single, but the Terriers would erupt for seven runs in the third to pull the game out of reach.
Eugley would add to the homerun barrage with a solo shot in the fourth as Thomas took the second game by same score of the first, 12-1.
Eugley went a perfect 4-4 in the leadoff spot, scoring three times with one RBI.
Thomas will be back on the field tomorrow as they host Maine Maritime Academy for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.
