CLERMONT, FL- The Thomas softball team (1-5) had a successful third day on their Florida swing picking up the first win of the 2013 season in final game of the day against Franciscan 7-4. In the first contest of the day versus Hood, the Terriers nearly game back from a 6-0 deficit, scoring five runs in the last two innings.
Hood got on the board first with three straight walks and put up a four-spot in the top of the second inning. They would add some insurance runs in the third and fourth innings by virtue of a Terrier fielding error and a wild pitch.
The Terriers capitalized on several Blazer miscues on defense to score four runs of their own in the fourth inning. Another defensive lapse in the fifth inning led to Thomas' fifth run
Thomas threatened in the seventh after Eugley reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. She then stole third and Taylor Bergeron (Lyman, Maine) stepped to the plate representing the winning run. Starter Jennifer Rutherford got Bergeron to fly out to Hagerdon in right and the next batter Samantha Moore (Etna, Mass.) popped up to Jenkins at first base and the Blazers escaped with the victory.
Julie Gustafson (Monson, Mass.) led the Terriers going 3-3 from the plate, while picking up an RBI. McKayla pitched 5.1 innings of work, while giving up seven hits and picking up the loss.
The Terriers were up 2-1, and then had a big fifth inning scoring five to give them a comfortable lead. The Barons added three runs in the sixth inning but could not close out a comeback.
