Waterville, Maine – The Thomas College softball team dropped a 3-2 loss to crosstown rival Colby in extra innings in a non-conference matchup with the Mules on Wednesday afternoon. Colby's Carolyn Bennett drove in the eventual game winning run in the top of the eighth off of a single she drove down the left field line, bringing home Lindsey Peterson. Thomas first year McKayla Gastia provided the Terriers with both runs as she had two RBI's for the home team.
With the loss the Terriers fall to 8-17-1 (5-4-1 NAC) on the season, while the Mules improve to 7-13.
The game remained scoreless till the top of the second when Colby pitcher Erin Caputo helped her own cause with a RBI right up the middle bringing in Peterson for the 1-0 lead. Thomas third basemen Ali Kriegel prevented the Mules scoring a second run, throwing out Aimee Polimeno at home after Bennett reached on a fielder's choice. Alanna Sanborn then flied out to right field to end the inning for the Mules. In the bottom of the second the Terriers left two batters on base as Kriegel was thrown out at home while trying to score off of a Sara Pavento single.
The Mules struck again in the top of the third with two outs when Brianne Wheeler sent a single up the lift side bring home Meaghan Lewia for the 2-0 lead. Wheeler was able to advance off of the throw to second and was soon in scoring position after a single from Peterson sent her to third. But the Terriers got out of the inning as Polimeno grounded out third ending the inning.
Both teams' bats went cold as only one hit was registered till the bottom seventh when a three hit inning provided the Terriers with two runs evening the score at 2-2. Samantha Moore got things rolling for Thomas with a single up the middle. With one out Lauren Hachey put the tying run on base when she singled advancing Moore to second base. A ground out by Kriegel advanced the runners into scoring position and with two outs Gastia singled to bring home Moore and Hachey. Gastie was thrown out as she attempted to advance to second but with her 2 RBI's the game was all locked up a two apiece as the teams went into extra innings.
The Mules didn't wait long to break the tie in the extra session as Bennett's RBI single made it a 3-2 game. Kelsey Crowe struck out the next Colby batter ending the top of the eighth. With Gastia placed on second Thomas' Kate Thibodeau hit a sacrifice bunt on a full count advancing Gastia and putting the tying run on third. However the Mules defense was up to the task as the a foul out by Kristi Hilton and a ground out by Alyssa Eugley ended the game and gave the visitors their seventh win of the year.
The Terriers will hit the road this weekend as they travel to Vermont to take on Green Mountain in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
