Softball Splits with NEC

Waterville, Maine – The Thomas College softball team split a doubleheader with the Pilgrims of New England College in North Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Pilgrims took game one 7-3 and the Terriers shut out NEC in game two 4-0, handing NEC their first NAC loss of the season.

Game One

NEC got on the board first with a three run inning in the top of the third. Elizabeth Harrigan brought in the first run of the game when she reached on a fielder's choice RBI bringing in the 1-0 score. RBI's from Stephanie Freitag and Alyssa Hoot gave the Pilgrims the 3-0 lead.

The Terriers did not answer till the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Hachey hit a sacrifice fly out to center field bring in Samantha Moore for the first Thomas run of the game.

The fifth inning saw NEC add four more runs to their lead making it a 7-1 ballgame. NEC got RBI's from Jessica Kiehl, Olivia Stanley, Taylor Belsito, and LiAnn Linck giving the Pilgrims a six run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh with two runner on and two outs first year  McKayla Gastia connected a two run RBI single bring in two Terriers and push the score to 7-3, but the Pilgrims were able to hold off a Thomas comeback as first year Alyssa Eugley hit a fly ball to center field for the easy out.

Harrigan grabs the win for NEC after spending three innings at the mound and allowing no hits while striking out one batter, while Thomas' Sara Pavento shoulders the loss for the home team.

Game Two

In the nightcap the Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Eugley stepped on home plate after a throwing error allowed Moore to reach and first year Alei Collier to advance to third. The Terriers got some insurance in the bottom of the fifth when Collier hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring in another Thomas run making it a 2-0 affair.

In the sixth inning the Terriers expand their lead to 4-0 as RBI's from first years Eugley and Sara Moynihan brought home the game's final runs and sealed the Thomas win.

Kelsey Crowe pitched a complete game for the win striking out five batters and allowing four hits, while Teraysa White shoulders the loss for NEC.

The Terriers will play host to the Mariners of Maine Maritime on Tuesday afternoon for a NAC doubleheader, game one is set for 3:30 p.m. NEC will take on Green Mountain in a NAC doubleheader Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Henniker.
