Orono, Maine- The Thomas College Terriers' softball team recorded two non-conference wins 12-0 and 6-0 against the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls Saturday night at Mahaney Dome on the Campus of University of Maine Orono to open their 2012 season. Terriers' pitching was the story of the night as senior Sara Pavento picked up the win in the first game throwing four innings only allowing two hits while striking out four. Junior pitcher Kelsey Crowe got the win in the second game throwing seven innings only allowing one hit and striking out eleven. Desiree Smith was the top performer for the Owls on the night recording two of their three hits.
With the wins the Terriers improve to 2-0 (0-0 NAC) on the year, while the Owls fall to 0-4 on the season.
In the first game, Thomas came out strong scoring 6 runs in the first two innings and never looking back to win in four innings. Freshman Alyssa Eugley led the terriers in the first game by recording four hits, one RBI, and scoring four runs. Crowe and Lauren Hachey also added two RBIs each for the terriers. For the Owls, Smith and Kathleen Higgins both recorded a hit in the outing while both Carolynn Tuck and Kellie Peers recorded a walk.
In the second game, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth and fifth innings when the terriers grabbed four of their six runs on the night. Hachey led the team in the second game recording one hit and two RBIs. Eugley, Molly Woodward, and Sara Moynihan also had one RBI each. The Owls met tough pitching by the Terriers and were held to only one hit from Smith. Pitcher Lainey Herring went to two and two thirds strong innings for the Owls only giving up one hit and one earned run.
The Terriers next game will be in Clermont, Florida as they kick off their spring trip with Babson College Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
