Terriers Split with MMA

Castine, Maine - The Thomas College Terriers (7-7, 1-1 NAC) and the Maine Maritime Academy Lady Mariners (7-2, 1-1 NAC) split a pair of North Atlantic Conference games on Tuesday at Ritchie Field. Thomas won the opener 8-6 in extra innings while MMA captured the nightcap 4-3.

In the first game, Cassie Manning drove in two runs including a solo home run helping the Thomas College Terriers to a 8-6 extra innings win over the Lady Mariners in a North Atlantic Conference match-up on Tuesday.

The Terriers (7-6, 1-0 NAC) got the scoring started in the second inning, scoring on a solo home run by Manning and then taking a 2-0 lead on a run producing double by Samantha Robison that plated Kate Thibodeau.

MMA answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd, when Andi Flannery doubled to left and then scored on a throwing error by the left fielder. Four batters later Mallery Stanley doubled to center field scoring Leah Jackson to tie the game at 2-2.

The Lady Mariners took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI ground out by Shelby Bassett.

The Terriers evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the 7th when Kelsey Crowe singled to left center, which scored Sarah Estes from first base after a bobble in the outfield. The Terriers tacked on another run to take a 4-3 lead when Manning singled to left scoring Kimberly Grant.

The Lady Mariners tied the game in the bottom of the 7th when Megan Russell reached second base after a throwing error with only one out in the inning. After Russell stole third base, Sabrina Keach doubled to deep left knocking in Russell and tying the game at 4-4.

Thomas exploded for four runs in the top of the 8th to take a 8-4 lead, capped off by a Crowe two run blast to left center putting the game out of reach. MMA scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th but it wasn't enough as Thomas won 8-6.

Sara Pavento recorded the win for Thomas while Casey McCloskey took the loss for MMA giving up six runs over four innings of work.

In the second game of the double header, McCloskey pitched seven strong innings, scattering five hits while striking out four to lead MMA to the 4-3 win. Leah Jackson reached base four times while Sabrina Keach and Brittany Hunt each collected two hits.

The Terriers scored first, when two MMA fielding errors led to a Samantha Moore run, helping Thomas jump out to a 1-0 lead.

MMA responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
