MTEN: Terriers Open Season with 8-1 Win Over Norwich

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's tennis team kicked off their 2020 campaign with an 8-1 victory over Norwich on Sunday afternoon at the Alfond Athletic Center.

Thomas swept doubles to start the match with a 3-0 lead. Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) and Ryan Chasse (Fort Kent, Maine) led off with an 8-5 win in top singles, followed by Yontz Sutton (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Jared Waterhouse (Dayton, Maine) winning 8-6 at No. 2. Liam Gould (Freeport, Maine) and Samuel Johnson (Fort Kent, Maine) picked up their first career wins with an 8-4 victory in the third flight.

The Terriers took five of six singles matches to earn the 8-1 win. Chasse earned straight 6-2 set wins to win at No. 1. Afonso picked up the win at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory while Waterhouse won straight 6-2 sets at No. 4. Gould went up 6-2 early at No. 5 but lost the second set 6-4. He bounced back to take the tiebreaker 10-8 and win the match. Samuel Falla (Palermo, Maine) rounded things out with his first collegiate victory, winning the sixth flight 6-0, 6-2.

Thomas will return to action on Saturday, March 14 for a pair of games. They'll visit Colby for a match at 9:00 AM before hosting Division II Franklin Pierce at Champions Fitness Club at 4:00 PM.
