MTEN: Thomas Wins NAC East Championship

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. – The Thomas College men's tennis team won their first conference championship since 2005, defeating Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in the Semifinal and SUNY Delhi in the Final to take the 2019 NAC East Championship.

The Terriers did not drop a point all day, clinching 5-0 wins in both rounds. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Ryan Chasse (Fort Kent, Maine) and Kaleb Payson (Lamoine, Maine) won 8-3 and 8-0. No. 2 pairing Jared Waterhouse (Dayton, Maine) and Yontz Sutton (Hamilton, Bermuda) took two 8-0 wins, while Christo Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine) and Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) won 8-2 and 8-4.

Chasse won both No. 1 singles matches beating Lyndon's No. 1 6-0, 6-2 before defeating SUNY Delhi 6-1, 6-0. Naranja earned the deciding point at No. 5 in the Semifinal, then Payson clinched the championship at No. 2 in the Final.

Chasse was named the Most Valuable Player for his play during the tournament.


Thomas advances to the NEAC Championship, where they will take on the NEAC/NAC West Champion Lancaster Bible on Sunday, May 5 at the Tri-City Tennis Club in Latham, N.Y.
