CASTLETON, Vt. – The Thomas College men's tennis team extended their winning streak to eight matches as they defeated Castleton University, 6-3, in North Atlantic Conference East action on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans dropped their first NAC East match of the season, falling to 3-1 in league play, while moving to 8-2 overall. The Terriers improved their overall mark to 9-4 and are now 4-0 in NAC East action.
Thomas got off to a quick start, taking all three doubles matches from Castleton to open the day. Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe lost their first doubles contest of the season, falling in a long, 9-7 battle to Ryan Chasse (Fort Kent, Maine) and Zachary Disch (Waterville, Maine). Ryan Mulder and Trevor Hanna fell to Jared Waterhouse (Dayton, Maine) and Kaleb Payson (Lamoine, Maine), 8-5, in No. 2 doubles action, while Brody Wagner and Tyler Wilcox fell to Ross Munn (Brunswick, Maine) and Mark Amato (Manchester, Conn.) in third doubles, 8-2.
Castleton looked to salvage the day in singles action, but the Terriers proved to be too much as Castleton took just three of six singles matches on the afternoon. Barthe extended his singles winning streak to five matches with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win over Munn at the second flight. Jared Wheeler made it seven consecutive singles wins with a three-set victory—6-2, 4-6, 6-2—over Waterhouse. Hanna marked the third Spartan victory on the day, downing Payson 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
The Terriers got singles victories from Chasse, Disch and Amato to seal the victory, as Chasse stifled Marcil at the top singles spot, 6-2, 6-0. Disch defeated Mulder in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 position, while Amato picked up a sixth-flight win over Wagner, 6-2, 6-2.
The Terriers will travel to Lyndon State on Saturday, April 22 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
