WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team suffered it's first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) defeat of the season, taking a 2-1 loss to Maine Maritime on Tuesday evening at Smith Field.
Thomas opened the scoring in the 13th minute when a beautiful cross from the right wing by Josh Morrissey (Scarborough, Maine) found its way to Zenawi Bowen (St. George's, Bermuda) who settled and fired a low shot through the left side for the 1-0 lead, which held through halftime.
The Mariners knotted it up in the 54th minute, when a Matthew Caron corner kick found the diving head of Evan Backus on the far side and ricocheted into the goal to tie it 1-1. MMA earned the game winner in the 82nd when a hard-struck Caron shot from far out created a juicy rebound for Brad McKechnie, who buried the game-winning goal.
Trevor Gray made four stops in net to earn the win for MMA. John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) took the loss, making three saves on five shots.
Thomas will await final seeding to determine their place in the 2019 NAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
