NAC Quarterfinal Preview: #3 Thomas Hosts #6 Maine Maritime

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team will host Maine Maritime Academy in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Quarterfinals on Sunday, October 29, in a 12:00 p.m. matchup at Smith Field.

The Terriers claimed the third seed in the tournament as they finished 8-8-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in conference action.  The Mariners stole the final tournament spot in the sixth seed as they end 4-9-3 overall and 3-4-2 in NAC play.

About the Terriers: Thomas enters the playoffs on Sunday, after finishing the season with a 3-3 record in their final six games.  Offensively, the team ranks first in the NAC with 50 goals (2.94 goals per game) on the year.  The Terriers have used a balanced scoring attack in 2017 as nine players recorded four goals or more.  Junior Adam LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine) leads the team with eight goals and two assists for 18 points along with three game-winning goals.  Last week's NAC Rookie of the Week, freshman Zenawi Bowen (St. George, Bermuda), sits second on the team in points with 15 (five goals and five assists) followed by Tevin Reid with 14 points (four goals, six assists).  Reid's six assists places him fifth in the conference.

In goal, the Terriers have switched it up this season as junior Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H.) and freshman John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) have split 14 of the 17 games this season.  Dutka has allowed 17 goals in 926 minutes of action along with 46 saves and a 1.65 goals-against average.  Villanueva ranks first in the NAC with seven goals allowed during his 604 minutes of play, 32 total saves, and a 1.04 goals-against average.

About the Mariners: Maine Maritime wrapped up their 2017 season, finishing 2-3-1 in the final six contests which included two non-conference losses.  The Mariners rank eighth in the NAC in goals with a 1.63 average on the year.  Sophomore Matthew Caron leads the offense with seven goals and three assists for 17 points followed by senior Ike Doiron with his five goals and one assist.

Junior Joshua Reeks has shouldered the load in goal for the Mariners in 985 minutes of action.  Reeks has been strong with 14 goals allowed (third in the NAC), 51 saves, three shutouts, and a 1.28 goals-against average.

Last Meeting: September 19, 2017 – Thomas 1, Maine Maritime 1 – 2OT

The Mariners looked to pull off the upset win earlier this season as Liam Welch put his team on the board in the 32nd minute.  Thomas tied the game up in the 57th minute on a marker from MacQuille Walker (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda).  The score remained the same throughout regulation and could not be settled in two overtime frames.  In the match, the Terriers outshot Maine Maritime 25-12 and held a slim 9-8 advantage in corners.  Reeks was impressive in net for the Mariners stopping nine of ten shots on goal.

The winner will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, November 1 at the second seed of Colby-Sawyer College.
