LEWISTON, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0, double overtime loss to Bates College on Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats improve to 5-3-2 overall in the victory while the Terriers drop down to 6-7-1 (4-1-1 NAC) in their fourth one-goal loss of the season.
The game remained scoreless in the first 90 minutes of play as Bates outshot the Terriers 23-10. Junior forward Adam LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine) led the team with four shots on goal in regulation.
With 21 seconds left in the second overtime, Peder Bakken ended the game as his shot from inside the box beat Terrier keeper John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) for the game winner. Bates held a 6-0 margin in shots during overtime.
Villanueva made five key saves in the effort for Thomas after relieving Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H.) who stopped all three shots at the half. Robbie Montanaro earned the win in goal for Bates, making four saves.
The Terriers will return to North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, October 14 as they host Lyndon State at 4:00 p.m. for Homecoming Weekend.
