WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team allowed two early goals en route to a 2-0 defeat against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Terriers drop their second straight contest, moving to 2-2 on the season while the Nor'easters earn their first victory at 1-3.
UNE took control of the match early as they netted their first goal of the game in the 3rd minute. Michail Bilek sent a deep ball from midfield into the box, finding Sam Child who finished with a header for a 1-0 lead. Just over ten minutes later in the 14th, another deep ball from Lee Esposito found Cody Kennedy alone up and over the Thomas defense as he tucked the ball inside the left post for an insurance goal.
The Nor'easters defense held strong throughout the contest, not allowing the Terriers many scoring opportunities. UNE keeper Nathan Delesdernier came up big in goal as his diving save with 26 minutes left on Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) kept the Terriers off the board. Delesdernier came up big once again in the 84th minute as he stopped Ibrahim Moustapher (Blantyre, Malawi) point blank in front of the goal.
Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H.) took the loss in goal for Thomas, stopping one shot while Delesdernier earned the shutout victory with five saves.
The Terriers will return to action on Tuesday, September 12 as they travel across town to face rival Colby College at 4:00 p.m. for the Elm City Cup.
