WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Unity College in their season opener on Friday night at Smith Field.
The Terriers move to 1-0 in the new season while the Rams drop to 0-1.
Early into the first half, junior Adam LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine) opened the scoring just four minutes in to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead on a feed from Tevin Reid (Dorchester, Mass.). The Rams responded in the 21st minute as Cyrus Beyer's deep shot beat a diving Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H) to tie the game up at 1-1.
LaBrie put the Terriers back ahead as he netted back-to-back goals in the 26th and 39th minute to complete the hat trick. Josh Emard (Lebanon, Maine) added another goal for Thomas from MacQuille Walker (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda) to finish the half at 4-1.
The offensive surge continued in to the second half as Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) tapped in a rebound during the 50th minute. Later on in the 71st, Shammah Gahomera (Westbrook, Maine) tallied his first collegiate goal to move the score to 6-1. The Terriers added two more late goals on a diving header from Jack Gallagher (Camden, Maine) and a one-timer by Nawfal El-Antri (Dorchester, Mass.) from Ben Carter (Sitka, Alaska).
Dutka was given the win in goal for Thomas while John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) and Nick Chandler (Wells, Maine) split time in the second half. Sam Napper took the loss in goal for Unity after making 11 saves.
The Terriers will return to the pitch on Sunday, September 3 as they host Fisher (Mass.) at 3:00 p.m. on Smith Field.
