Terriers Can't Overcome Early Deficit at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – The Thomas College men's lacrosse team could not overcome a five-goal first quarter deficit in a 9-5 loss to Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Wednesday night.

The Mariners improve to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the NAC, while the Terriers fall to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

The Mariners scored five times in the first quarter, led by three-straight goals from Chase Whittemore, to build a 5-1 lead. The Terriers scored twice in the second quarter to close the gap to 5-3 entering halftime, but the Mariners scored twice in the third quarter to take a 7-3 lead and held on for the 9-5 victory.

Whittemore led the Mariners with four goals, one assist, seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Dean Samuelson added a hat-trick and dished out an assist, while scooping up seven ground balls and causing a turnover. Alex Grant-Roy added a goal, two assists, four ground balls and a caused turnover and Andrew Waltz picked up the other goal for the Mariners. George Doe led the Mariners from the faceoff circle, going 14-of 17, to scoop up a game-high 11 ground balls.

Johnathan Wilcox (Palmyra, Maine) led the Terriers with two goals, Colby Blondin (Colchester, Vt.) added one goal and two assists, and Michael Small (Brentwood, N.H.) added the other goal for Thomas. Blondin added eight ground balls and Tyler Bartlett (Wells, Maine) led the team with two caused turnovers.

In net, Daniel Lee recorded three saves and three ground balls in the victory, while Connor Lamberton (Shohola, Pa.) tallied 19 saves and nine ground balls in the loss.

The Terriers will head to Green Mountain on Saturday, April 22 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
