Terriers Take Down Wildcats in Home Opener, 7-5

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the season as they defeated Wheelock, 7-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

In the victory, the Terriers sit at 1-3 (0-1 NAC) overall while the Wildcats fall to 1-6.

Thomas opened the scoring at the ten-minute mark of the first quarter as Johnathan Wilcox (Palmyra, Maine) scored on a feed from Jacob Kendall (Lewiston, Maine) for a 1-0 lead before the first break.

The Wildcats responded with two quick goals in the second quarter from Jared Trainor and Luke McKinnon, giving Wheelock at 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Colby Blondin (Colchester, Vt.) tied the game up at 2-2 on an assist from Kade Strout (Richmond, Maine).  Just over a minute later, Michael Small (Brentwood, N.H.) netted his first goal of the season to give the Terriers the lead.

The Wildcats fought back with a goal of their own at the 12-minute mark of the third as Noah Horning notched the game up once again.  Strout put the Terriers back on top before the end of the third quarter on a man up opportunity. 

Thomas looked to pull away in the final quarter as Blondin and Kendall added two goals for a 6-3 lead with 9:28 remaining.  Wheelock refused to go away as Horning and Josh Simmons scored back-to-back markers to cut the lead down to one.  With under a minute remaining, Blondin put the game away with another goal to finish the scoring at 7-5.

Blondin led all scorers with three goals and an assists.  He also had a team-high 12 shots and five groundballs.  Freshman Tyler Whitten (Wells, Maine) caused five turnovers and scooped up six groundballs.

Horning paced the Wildcats with two goals while Trainor added a goal and two helpers.

Connor Lamberton (Shohola, Pa.) turned aside ten shots in the victory for Thomas while Josh DiMassa stopped 13 in the effort for Wheelock.

The Terriers will continue their North Atlantic Conference schedule on Saturday, April 1 as they host Castleton in a 12:00 p.m. contest.
