WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team defeated Saint Joseph's College 90-73 in a non-conference game at Larry Mahaney Gym on Wednesday evening.
The Terriers were led by Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), who scored 23 points and pulled in five rebounds with three assist, and Jordan Goodson (Orlando, Fla.), who added 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals off the bench.
The Terriers outshot the Monks in all three shooting categories, going 47.1% from the field, 48.0% from the arc and a perfect 100% (14-14) from the free throw line.
The teams were evenly matched in the early parts of the first half, with the score tied 17-17 midway through the period. Thomas went on a 22-5 run through the majority of the final ten, holding a 39-22 advantage with under a minute to go. Jack Casale hit a buzzer-beating three at the end of the half to make it 41-27 and narrow the Thomas lead to 14 at the intermission.
The Monks started the second frame on a 13-6 run over the first four minutes to cut the Thomas advantage down to single-digits, 47-40. Thomas answered with a 23-10 run of their own to gain their largest lead of the night of 70-50. SJC was able to cut the lead down to as little as 11, but the Terriers held them off and took the 90-73 victory.
Thomas will host a North Atlantic Conference contest with Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Friday, January 17 at 7:30 PM in Larry Mahaney Gym.
