AMHERST, Mass. – The Thomas College men's basketball team cruised by Elmira College 82-53 to claim the consolation game of the Ken Wright Invitational at Amherst College on Saturday afternoon.
Elmira got out to a hot start early on, grabbing an 11-2 lead three and a half minutes in. Thomas got into gear and by the 8:35 mark had pulled the score within three, trailing 24-21. The Eagles stifled the Terriers attempts over the next five minutes until Tyler Nixon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit a pair of threes that tied the game finally gave the Terriers a 33-30 advantage. Thomas held the lead until the final seconds of the half when Elmira hit a last-second jumper that tied it 39-39 heading into the intermission.
The teams traded baskets in the opening part of the second half, with the Terriers leading 50-47 with 11:28 to go. The Terriers turned on the jets from that point, outscoring Elmira 32-6 in the final 11 minutes of the game to take a dominant 82-53 win.
Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) and Lovegeurson Fleurine (Fort Pierce, Fla.) each scored 20 points to lead the way for Thomas. Mackinnon was 8-for-16 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range. Fleurine recorded his fourth-consecutive double-double to start the year, adding 13 rebounds to his 20 points. Jacob Godfrey (Machias, Maine) added a scoring touch off the bench, netting a career-high 17 points with nine rebounds.
Thomas travels to Dean for a 3:00 PM contest on Tuesday, November 26.
