BANGOR, Maine – Tyler Nixon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer to push the Thomas College men's basketball team to an 83-80 victory over Husson on Friday evening in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game.
Thomas took the early advantage with a Justin Butler (Orlando, Fla.) layup and free throw at the 16:50 mark giving the Terriers a 14-6 lead. Husson rattled off 12 straight points over the next three minutes to gain the 18-14 lead.
The teams stayed even through the following eight minutes as the Terriers held a 33-31 edge. A Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) three-pointer sparked a 7-2 run for Thomas, but the Eagles chipped back away to make it 40-38 at the half.
Husson started the second half hot with a 24-11 run over the first six minutes to take control at 62-51. After six minutes of back-and-forth, the Terriers made their move and went on a 23-12 run to close the gap to 80-74 with two minutes to go. Evan Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.) hit a three-pointer with just over a minute to go to make it 80-77 to set up the final minute of play.
After the Terriers forced a Husson turnover, Zach MacKinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) hit another three to tie the game at 80-80 with 35 seconds to go. The Eagles had two shots close to the basket to win the game, but on the second shot Nixon picked up the rebound and lobbed a shot from the Husson free throw line as time expired and buried it in the back of the net for the 83-80 victory.
Butler led Thomas with 14 points, while Mackinnon and Arsenault each tacked on 13. Michael Gilman (Windham, Maine) was the fourth Terrier to score in double-digits, notching 11 points.
Thomas will host Maine Maritime Academy in a NAC contest on Saturday, February 9 at 1:00 PM at Larry Mahaney Gym.
