WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team opened their season with a 100-75 win over UMaine-Augusta in the opening game of the Charlie Ryan Classic on Friday evening at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
The teams struggled to get into a scoring rhythm early, totaling just 24 points over the first 10 minutes of the game, with UMA holding a 13-11 advantage midway through. After the Moose took a 23-21 lead with 6:15 to go, the Terriers went on an 18-7 run to close out the half and take a 39-30 lead into the break.
UMaine-Augusta closed the gap in the first five minutes of the second half, outscoring Thomas 18-11 over the span to cut the lead to 50-48. The Terriers answered back, exploding for a 24-7 run that put them ahead 74-55 midway through the half. The Moose brought the lead back down to 11 at 80-69 with four minutes to go, but Thomas pulled back away to take the 100-75 win.
Thomas' Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points while adding five assists and four rebounds. Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) added 16 off the bench, nailing four three-pointers. Lovegeurson Fleurine (Fort Pierce, Fla.) hauled in a game and career-high 17 rebounds, while Patrik Lubin (Orlando, Fla.) collected 10 boards of his own.
Dustin Simpson-Bragg and Israel Brown led the Moose with 19 points each, while Noah Thompson added 18.
The Terriers will host day two of the Charlie Ryan Classic on Saturday, November 10 as they take on Norwich at 1:00 PM.
