WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team defeated UMaine-Farmington 65-62 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium. Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) and John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) each scored their 1000th collegiate points in the victory.
The Terriers improve to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the NAC, while the Beavers drop to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The teams traded baskets over the early going in the first, with UMaine-Farmington holding an 11-8 lead at the 11:20 mark. The Beavers took control from there, outscoring the Terriers 20-14 over the next nine minutes. Thomas was able to pull the deficit to singles digits at the half with two Gonzalez layups making the score 33-26.
The Beavers held control through most of the second half, pushing their lead eleven at the 6:51 mark. The Terriers stormed back over the next five minutes, with a Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) jump shot capping off a 13-1 run and giving Thomas a 61-60 lead with 1:40 remaining. Gonzalez and Milani Hicks traded rebounds to make the score 63-62 with 24 seconds left. Justin Butler (Orlando, Fla.) hit both free throws on the ensuing possession and Morgan forced a steal to cap off the 65-62 comeback victory.
Morgan led Thomas with 26 points, while Gonzalez recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Allen (Barre, Vt.) led Thomas off the bench with nine points.
Hicks paced the Beavers with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Amir Moss and Riley Robinson added 13 points each.
The Terriers return to action on Tuesday, January 16 when they host UMaine-Augusta at 7:00 p.m.
