Turnovers Costly as Gators Top Terriers, 73-65

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team turned the ball over 34 times in a 73-65 loss to Pine Manor College on Saturday afternoon in the Charlie Ryan Classic held at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

The Terriers split their first two games and sit at 1-1 as the Gators earned their first victory at 1-2.

Pine Manor applied a full court pressure defense for the majority of the contest, forcing the Terriers into 18 turnovers in the first half.  Steven Collins and Jamel Hamans scored the Gators first 12 points as they jumped out to a 12-6 lead five minutes into the first. 

Lou Savage increased the Pine Manor late in the half to 18 points as he finished with seven points in just seven minutes of play.  Sophomore Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) and Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) added late buckets before the half as the Terriers trailed 39-24 at the break.

Midway through the second half, freshman Justin Butler (Orlando, Florida) scored nine straight points to bring Thomas back within seven.  For the rest of the half, the Terriers could only come within three as the Gators capitalized on free throws to secure a 73-65 victory.

Mackinnon tied for a game-high 18 points along with three rebounds while Butler finished with 14 points and three assists.  Gonzalez followed with a double-double at 10 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks.

Hamans led the Gators offense with 18 points while Rasheed Bell chipped in with 15 points and four boards.

The Terriers will travel across town on Tuesday, November 21 as they face Colby College at 7:30 p.m.
