WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team has announced its 2017-18 schedule for the upcoming season beginning in November. The 25-game schedule was prepared by fourth-year head coach, Geoff Hensley.
The men's basketball program is coming off a record performance season as they finished tied for second in the regular season conference standings and came up short in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship game (first visit since 2009).
The Terriers will open their season with the annual Charlie Ryan Classic on the campus of Thomas College on November 17 and 18. The round-robin style tournament will feature the University of Maine at Machias, Pine Manor College, and University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Thomas will continue non-conference play as they travel across town to face rival Colby College in the Battle of Elm City on November 22 before departing for Thanksgiving break. Upon returning from break, the Terriers will begin conference play with Husson on November 28 in a rematch of last year's NAC Championship game.
In December, the Terriers will host back-to-back home conference games against Lyndon State and Johnson on December 1 and 2. The team will then travel for a non-conference match with Wheelock in Boston, Mass, on December 6, for a rematch of last year's Charlie Ryan Classic championship game. The Terriers will wrap-up the fall semester on the road at the University of Maine at Farmington on December 9.
Following their Christmas break, Thomas will head to the "Birthplace of Basketball", Springfield, Massachusetts, to compete in the James Naismith Classic held at Springfield College on December 30 and 31. The tournament includes some of the top teams in the region, including: Springfield College, Wesleyan University (CT), and Fitchburg State University (MA). Thomas will face the host team in Springfield in the opening game.
"We have a very challenging and competitive non-conference schedule which should be great tests for our players as we look to compete in conference play," said Coach Hensley. "Going to Springfield College will be a good measure for our team as we battle some of the top teams in New England."
When Thomas returns to Maine, they continue their road trip with stops at New England College and Colby-Sawyer on the first weekend of 2018. The Terriers return home with two home games with UMaine-Farmington (Jan. 13) and UMaine-Augusta (Jan. 16). The team will then finish out the month with five NAC games, including: at Green Mountain, at Castleton, and three home games with Maine Maritime, Colby-Sawyer, and New England College.
In the final month, the Terriers travel to Vermont to take on Johnson and Lyndon State before they finish the regular season with three of four home games against Castleton, Green Mountain, at Maine Maritime, and home versus Husson.
The NAC tournament begins the following week on February 20 with the championship game on February 24 at the number one seed's location.
