Preview: Men's Basketball To Host Colby-Sawyer in NAC Quarterfinal

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team will host Colby-Sawyer in a North Atlantic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal matchup at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

The Terriers (13-12, 11-7 NAC) are the No. 3 seed, while the Chargers (12-13, 9-9 NAC) are seeded sixth.

About the Terriers

Thomas averages 72.4 points, 37.9 rebounds, and 14.6 assists per game while shooting 45.1 percent from the field.  The Terriers are allowing opponents to score 73.4 points per game.

Tyheem Simon leads the team and sits second in the conference with 21.4 points per game.  He also sits fourth in the NAC with a 56 percent shooting percentage and is fifth with a 40.9 three-point percentage.  Carlos Gonzalez averages a double-double for the Terriers with his 13.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game that places him third in the conference.  Gonzalez also sits third in the conference for his 56.7 percent from the field.  Freshman Zach Mackinnon has turned up the offense in his last five games, averaging 17.2 points per game. 

About the Chargers

Colby-Sawyer averages 79.6 points, 40.6 rebounds, and 14.6 assists per game while shooting 42.1 percent from the floor.  The Chargers are allowing opponents to score an average of 78.6 points per game.

Jourdain Bell leads the Chargers with 20.4 points per game, placing him third in the conference in scoring.  Freshman Dana Bean has been a force in the paint this season with his 14.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game that places him fourth in the conference.  Bean also ranks fifth in the NAC for posting a 55.5 percentage from the field.

Last Meeting: February 11, 2017 - Thomas 90, Colby-Sawyer 77

The Chargers could not get the shots to fall in the first 6:49, as they were held scoreless.  Thomas capitalized with 13 points to take an early 13-0 lead.  Midway through the half, Colby-Sawyer responded with four points each from Patrick Coffey and Dana Bean to bring their team back within nine.

The Chargers looked to leading scorer Jourdain Bell as he finished the first half with nine points while Bean added eight of his own along with three rebounds.  The Terriers held a hot hand throughout the first on 17-of-25 shooting (68%).  Senior Tyheem Simon paced the Terriers with 13 points and five rebounds while freshman Zach Mackinnon chipped in with 12 points for a 45-31 advantage at the break.

Five minutes into the second half, the Chargers offense began to show life as Milani Hicks knocked down a three and Bean slammed in a huge dunk to bring the score within ten.  The Terriers responded as Mackinnon buried a three-pointer along with a three-point play from senior Jordan Derosby.

Timely shooting continued for the Terriers in the second half, finishing the scoring at 90-77.  Thomas finished 31-for-51 (60.8%) on the field while Colby-Sawyer shot 26-for-65 (40%) and a tough 7-for-26 (26.9%) from behind the arch.  Nate Cook had a solid half for the Chargers as he scored all of his 13 points in the second.

Simon and Mackinnon each finished 23 points in the win, shooting 10-for-15 and 9-for-15 from the floor.  Derosby added 17 points, seven boards, and three assists while Carlos Gonzalez completed the double-double at 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Ian King netted six points and dished out 13 assists.

The Chargers saw five players in double figures with Bean leading the way at 18 points and six rebounds.  Bell contributed with 15 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
