Gonzalez, Simon Lift Terriers Past Hornets, 71-63

LYNDONVILLE, VT – The Thomas College men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak as they defeated Lyndon State College, 71-63, in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Friday night.

The Terriers move back to .500 in the win at 6-6 (4-1 NAC) as the Hornets fall to 2-7 (1-4 NAC).

The Terriers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on six points from Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine / Lewiston).  Midway through the first half, Ian King (Westbrook, Maine / Hebron Academy) knocked down two big three-pointers and added a layup to increase the Terrier lead to 26-14.

The Hornets looked to close the gap on a 7-0 run, bringing the score to 26-21 on free throws from Josiah Woodruff.  Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y. / Lawrence) finished the half with five straight points to give Thomas a 36-29 lead going into the break.

Gonzalez was a force inside for the Terriers, as he hit the double-double mark with five minute remaining in the first on 10 points and 15 rebounds.  Simon led the scoring with 11 points and three boards.  Woodruff paced the Hornets with eight points as his team struggled on 12-of-37 shooting.

Lyndon came out strong to open the second on a 9-2 run as Raymond Monroe finished a layup to notch the game up at 38-38.  After the Terriers held a small lead throughout the second, the Hornets came back within one on a layup and free throw from Monroe at the 6:47 mark.

Just over two minutes later Simon finished two layups and Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) hit a three to put the Terriers up 64-58.  Lyndon clawed their way back to bring the game within four with 1:21 remaining on a three-point play from Xavier Colbert.  With the shot clock down to four, Simon put the game out of reach with another three with under a minute left.  Jordan Derosby knocked down a late free throw to finish the scoring at 71-63.

Simon led all scorers with a game-high 23 points and pulled down five boards.  Gonzalez finished with a double-double on 16 points and 19 rebounds.  The Terriers shot a respectable 23-for-50 from the floor at 46 percent.

The Hornets had four players in double digits as Monroe finished with 13 points and five boards.  Woodruff chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals.

The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, January 7, as they travel to Johnson State for a 1:00 p.m. North Atlantic Conference matchup.
