Waterville, Maine—The Thomas College men's basketball team fell 84-71 to the Jumbos of Tufts University in the Championship game of the Charlie Ryan Classic sponsored by Best Western Plus. The Terriers were led by sophomore Stanley Greene Jr. who had a game-high 22 points.
Tom Folliard hit a jump-shot to put the Jumbos(2-0) on the boards first but junior Jarrad DeVaughn answered back for the Terriers(2-1) by putting in a lay up. After nine minutes of play sophomore Franklin Salvador hit a jumper to give Thomas their first lead of the game, 23-22. A lay-up made by James Long returned the lead to the Jumbos but shortly after DeVaughn hit a jumper to give the Terriers the lead. The Jumbos took the lead that they would never relinquish off of a layup made by Scott Anderson.
At the end of the first half Tufts led 43-39.
The Jumbos started off the second half on an eight point run that was kicked off on a layup made by Alex Orchowski. The Jumbos run was ended by Thomas' Martin Cleveland when he drained a jumper at the 16:43 mark. Thomas attempted to chip away at Tufts lead but the Jumbos held on to win 84-71.
With the victory the Tufts become the Champions of the 2011 Charlie Ryan Classic.
DeVaughn, who was named to the All-Tournament team, netted 18 points, grabbed two boards, and dished out six assist for the Terriers and Cleveland pulled down nine boards while adding 14 points and an assist.
The Jumbos were lead by the Tournament MVP Orchowski who scored 17 points while corralling 11 rebounds. Folliard, who was named to the All-Tournament team, added 14 points, four rebounds and two assist while Anderson netted 12 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and added an assist.
The Terriers return to action when the travel to Bobcats of Bates College on November 29th for an 8 p.m. match-up. Tufts tips-off at home on November 22nd against the Pride of Regis College.
