WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College field hockey team fell to Colby College 6-2 in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening on Bernatchez Field.
Thomas held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners in the opening frame but were unable to convert and went into the second quarter with the score remaining 0-0.
Colby turned it on in the second, gaining seven corner opportunities and scoring on four of them. Lauren Walter scored the first for the Mules in the 16th minute, followed by another from Kaitlyn Smith a minute and a half later. Walter scored again in the 20th minute with an assist from Delaney Keithley, then Emily Hogan netter one on a tip in from Georgia Cassidy to make it 4-0 at the half.
The Terriers came out strong in the third, with Allie Gregoire (Kennebunk, Maine) collecting a wide shot from Kelci Faulkingham (Belfast, Maine) off a corner and putting it home to get Thomas on the board, 4-1. Christina Denis (Waterville, Maine) scored her first of the season on a dish from Danita Storey (Cumberland, Maine) to pull the score to 4-2 in the 35th minute. The Mules answered right back with an Eliza Mell goal two minutes later to push the lead back to 5-2.
Smith picked up her second on a feed from Hogan to give Colby the 6-2 win.
Emily Buckman earned the win in goal for Colby, making three saves on five shots. MacKenzie Oberholzer (Hancock, Md.) took the loss, making four saves on eight shots in the first half. Leah Kruse (Norridgewock, Maine) took over in the second half, making six stops on eight shots.
Thomas will visit Mount Holyoke on Saturday, September 12 for a 12:00 PM game.
