Eagles Top Terriers with Big Second Half

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College field hockey team fell to Husson University, 6-1, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Bernatchez Field.

In the loss, the Terriers now sit at 1-7 (0-2 NAC) while the Eagles improve to 5-3 (2-0 NAC) on the year.

The Eagles opened the scoring early in the first half in the 12th minute as Lauren Russell sent a hard pass to Taylor Shaw on the right side.  Shaw redirected the pass behind Terrier goalie Leah Kruse (Norridgewock, Maine) for a 1-0 lead. 

The Terriers responded four minutes after with a goal of their own as Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) sent a centering pass out front to Danita Storey (Cumberland Ctr, Maine).  Storey's backhand sweep shot tucked inside the right of the cage for her first collegiate goal. 

Husson tallied the go-ahead goal with 25 seconds remaining in the half as Kruse made the initial save on a shot from Russell.  Sadie Royer scooped up the rebound and slammed in a goal for a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles extended their lead early in the second half in the 37th minute as Shaw scored her second of the game on a rebound.  Royer tallied her second of the game four minutes later to bring the lead to 4-1.  Shaw completed the hat trick in the 47 minute followed by a goal in the 67th from Alli Bourget to finish the scoring at 6-1.  Russell ended the game with four assists.

Kruse was given the loss in goal after making nine saves on 14 shots while MacKenzie Oberholzer (Greencastle, Pa.) made two saves in the relief effort.  Anne Marie Provencal came up big for the Eagles, turning aside ten shots in the win.

Husson outshot the Terriers 22-12 and held a 10-9 advantage in corners.

The Terriers will travel to Saint Joseph's (ME) on Tuesday, October 3 for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game.
