Field Hockey Edged by Simmons in OT, 2-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College field hockey team fell in overtime, 2-1, to Simmons College on Sunday morning at Bernatchez Field.

In the loss, the Terriers now sit at 1-1 in the early season while the Sharks also move to 1-1 in their first victory of 2017.

The Sharks opened the scoring 17 minutes into the first half as Sammy Rondeau sent a pass to a wide open Olivia Trull on the far post.  Trull's one-timer slammed into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers received a golden opportunity ten minutes into the second half as Tiffany Weeks (Kennebunk, Maine) was awarded a penalty stroke.  Weeks' shot beat goaltender Lucy McNamara to the left side of the goal, tying the game up at 1-1.

The score remained tied up after a full 70 minutes, forcing the two teams into an overtime frame.  Simmons capitalized early into the extra time as Julie Saltamartini beat the Terrier defense, allowing her to go in all alone on Thomas goalkeeper Leah Kruse (Skowhegan, Maine).  Saltamartini stepped around a diving Kruse and sent in the game-winner for a 2-1 victory.

Kruse was given the loss in her first game as a Terrier, stopping three shots.  McNamara also turned aside three shots in the winning effort.  The Sharks outshot the Terriers 8-6 while Thomas held a 12-3 advantage in corners.

The Terriers will sit idle until Saturday, September 9 as they travel Nichols for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
