WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College field hockey team shutout the University of Southern Maine, 1-0, in a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Bernatchez Field.
In the victory, the Terriers move to 1-0 in the season opener while the Huskies drop to 0-1.
The Terriers struck midway through the first half at 16:55 as senior Abigail Dunn (Gardiner, Maine) took a deep shot to beat goalkeeper Anna Huff.
The Huskies could not capitalize on three first half corner opportunities, including a chance when time expired in the first half.
After seven shots in the opening half, the Southern Maine offense fell short with only two shots in the final half, ending the scoring at 1-0. Southern Maine outshot Thomas 9-4 while the Terriers held a 7-5 advantage in corners.
Freshman MacKenzie Oberholzer (Greencastle, P.A.) earned a shutout victory in her first collegiate start, turning aside six shots while Huff made two saves in the effort.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday, September 3 as they host Simmons at 11:00 a.m. on Bernatchez Field.
